Reading the number
Below ~70% funded usually means lifting contributions or pushing the date out. Between 70% and 100% the gap is closeable with salary sacrifice or a later retirement. Above 100% the plan clears the comfortable standard — check the comfortable column anyway. Estimates only: markets, rules and the income test all move the real outcome.

Illustrative model in today’s dollars using a constant real return. Pension estimate applies the assets test at projected wealth (rates from 20 Sep 2025); the income test, deeming, transition-to-retirement, and drawdown-sequencing are not modelled. ASFA Retirement Standard figures are the June quarter 2026 release. General information — not personal financial advice.

Funded % vs ASFA modest and comfortable

The ASFA benchmark is the honest yardstick

ASFA publishes quarterly budgets for a modest and a comfortable retirement — June quarter 2026 puts comfortable at $56,166/yr for a single and $78,998 for a couple, assuming home ownership. A projected income above that line means the plan clears the standard; below it, the gap shows how far contributions or the retirement date need to move.

The Age Pension still does heavy lifting

The full pension pays around $31,223/yr for a single and $47,070 for a couple — over half of the comfortable standard before super draws a dollar. The assets test tapers it by $3/fortnight per $1,000 above the free area, so most households land on a part pension plus super drawdown.

What this estimate leaves out

The income test (deeming), contribution caps, sequencing risk, inflation shocks, and housing costs for renters all move the real outcome. Treat the funded percentage as a planning signal, then pressure-test it with Moneysmart’s planner or an adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Why a real return instead of nominal?
Expressing everything in today’s dollars keeps the ASFA targets comparable — a 5% real assumption nets inflation out of both sides of the equation.
Is the pension estimate reliable?
It applies the assets test to your projected nest egg at the published thresholds. The income test and deeming rules can reduce it further — Services Australia’s estimator gives the exact figure.
What if I rent in retirement?
The ASFA modest-renter budget is much higher (~$51k single) and Commonwealth Rent Assistance only partly offsets it. Non-homeowners should read the result conservatively.
